Fifo “50 States” by Hayley Rose

http://www.cafeofdreamsbookreviews.com/2011/03/review-fifo-50-states-by-hayley-rose.html

An adorably fun and educational book, Fifo “50 States” should be a main staple to every child’s library.  Fifo the bear is a huggable, fun and the perfect tour guide who will introduce your child to all 50 States of the United States.  With delightfully rhyming text, each state has it’s very own poem, complete with vital information such as which numerical founding state it is, the capital, the flower, tree, bird and the location in retrospect to the entire United States, that state is.  On the opposite page, of the poem, is a colorful and hard-to-resist illustration depicting the poem, as well as showing the state’s flag and other great things that that particular state is known for.

Fifo “50 States” is in alphabetical order, which makes looking up particular states quick and easy.  Also with it’s catchy, rhyming text, these facts are easy to learn and memorize.  It is a proven fact that by providing a rhyme or rhythm to text, the brain is much more likely to register and remember what is being taught.  A tempo type of learning mixed with associative learning makes learning so much more fun and easier.  Fifo “50 States” is the perfect tool to teach children about the individual states and the importance they each hold to making the United States a whole.

Kids will adore Fifo and adults will delight in their children’s delight in learning.  This is truly a book that will continue to be treasured within our family.

The Children’s and Teens’ Book Connection – Review

Fifo “50 States” by Hayley Rose

I love books that educate while they entertain. This is certainly true of Fifo “50 States” by Hayley Rose.

In this fun, rhyming adventure, Fifo the Bear invites children to join him on his imaginary tour of the 50 states of America. From Alabama to Arkansas, from Georgia to Indiana, from Missouri to New Mexico, and beyond, readers learn capitals, state flowers, native birds, and  more.

The states are listed in alphabetical order, which I love, and the repetitive rhymes encourage memorization. Each state’s page also includes the state’s motto.  The charming illustrations by artist Jessie B. Orlet include each state flower, bird, and flag, but also other items the state is famous for, which creates an avenue for additional discussion.

I wish I had this book when my daughter was studying U.S. capitals earlier this year.

I highly recommend Fifo “50 States” by Hayley Rose. Learning should always be this much fun.

Rating:  5/5   Excellent book!  Run out right now and buy it!!!

Finding Our Way Home – Review

Fifo “50 States” by Hayley Rose

Fifo “50 States” is the second Fifo the bear book by Hayley Rose.  Fifo is a cute bear that loves to explore and share all the places that he visits.  This rhyming story is a great way to get children interested in the facts about each of the 50 states.  Each state has it’s own page and Fifo talks about where the state is located and what number state it is, plus more(like what is mentioned above in the intro).  It has a great format so your child is likely to really start remembering these facts the more he/she reads the book.  All the pages are in alphabetical order by the state.

Accompanying the written story are great illustrations by Jessie B. Orlet.   They show pictures of what the state is like along with the states flag and state landmarks.  They even show what each of the states shape/outline looks like on the map. I like how some of the states that are well known for their large cities like New York or Illinois have illustrations of both the city and the rural areas.  Orlet does a great job showing how Fifo is enjoying each state he visits.

I really like all the facts whether written or illustrated in the book.  I like the rhyming which I think makes the story fun and will draw the children to it even more.  I think this book would be great for young children who are learning about the states in elementary school.  I also think this would be a great book if you are planning a trip.  The children can use it to help learn about the state(s) they are visiting, or even help them to talk about the state(s) when they come back from their trip.

For more information on this book or author Hayley Rose please visit http://www.fifothebear.com/  There you can purchase the book or even some products.  They have some great tees that would be cute if you are planning a trip.  You can also find some free coloring pages or word jubbles to print out.  Wouldn’t they be fun for a road trip?!  I think these will be great for when I go on a road trip in a month with the kids.  I think Zach will have fun checking out the book while we go through 6 different states and having some coloring pages to go along with it!

One Day at a Time/Creating Childhood Memories – Review

Another fabulous review from Canada!

http://bookreviewsandotherstuff.blogspot.com/2011/03/fifo-50-states-by-hayley-rose.html

Fifo “50 States” is an extremely informative book for all ages.  Fifo the bear takes the reader on a journey through the United States explaining a little about each state as he travels along.  While the book is geared towards the younger generation, unless you know everything there is to know about each individual state, then I’m positive you will find something in this delightful book.

The book lists each state in alphabetical order and with rhyming prose Fifo teaches you the state’s capital, it’s flower, national tree, bird as well as, the numerical listing of each state as they joined the constitution.  The pages are wonderfully illustrated with other facts drawn throughout, things like what a state is “famous” for, the export of the states industries and much more.  Did you know that Kentucky was the 15th state??  South Dakota’s national tree is the Black Hills Spruce or how the Mockingbird is Tennessee’s state bird??  With so many interesting tidbits to share and explore, the children will enjoy talking about the things they find throughout the pages

This is a very interesting book that my children quite enjoyed, we are Canadians and we learned so much from it.  I would suggest home-school families pick a copy of this up and add it to their reference shelves, as well, school/public libraries would also benefit.  I would love to see Fifo take us around the world, or to other countries and teach us more about the things we don’t know and should.  My children thank you Fifo for being such a wonderful tour guide, we look forward to more of your adventures.

Amazon.com – New Review

There’s a new 5 star review up at Amazon.com today!

http://www.amazon.com/Fifo-50-States-Hayley-Rose/dp/0981464823/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1299803892&sr=8-1

My son is 6 and he loves this book! When we first got it, he read it out loud to me over two nights (he’s a very good reader for his age). He loved the poetic writing style and then he spent time on each page looking at the pictures. It’s great when a book that is so educational can draw a child’s interest for such a long time. A few nights ago, he was looking on Google Earth on our computer. Then the next morning, I noticed that he had the “Fifo 50 States” book open to the North Carolina page, so he must have been curious to see the places that he was reading about. I would definitely recommend this book for any child who wants to learn more about America and also to elementary school teachers.

Mundie Kids – Book Review- Fifo “50 States”

Fifo takes readers on a fun trip all across the US starting with Alabama. Fifo not only teaches kids about the states in alphabetical order, but he teaches kids the capitols, the motto, the state bird, flower and something interesting about each state. The illustrations are a great addition to this fun story, as kids are able to see the different things that each state is known for.

My preschooler enjoyed this book. With the book reading in rhythm, it was easy for her to get into the story and she loved seeing the various pictures and what the different states offer. I enjoyed reading it as it was like taking a quick mini vacation across the 50 states without having to leave my home.

I think this will make a fantastic addition to any home and class room. Older kids will be able to read the book and learn a little something about their state and the states that make up our country. I would recommend picking it up.

A Great Read

My Book Retreat – Book Review

Book Review: Fifo “50 States” by Hayley Rose

I recently got the opportunity to read a new children’s geography book called Fifo “50 States” by Hayley Rose. I was especially excited to see this book because my kids and I try to do weekly geography lessons, which I write about over on my Just Playin’ Around blog. So I’m always looking for new geography resources, and this one is great!

Each left-hand page features a rhyme that introduces a state by telling what number state it is, the capital, state flower, state tree and state bird. It has the state motto at the bottom of the page as well. Here’s an example:

Up in the north
lies the 23rd state,
it is called Maine
and I hear it’s just great.
Augusta is the capital
and there are many things to see,
like the White Pine Cone and Tassel flower
and the Eastern White Pine tree.
The bird, the Chickadee,
lives in Maine too.
It’s a wonderful place to visit,
I’d like to go there, wouldn’t you?

On the right-hand page, there is a picture related to the state. This is what makes this book so great! While we get some good facts out of the rhyme, it is limited to the same pieces of information for each state. But the vibrant pictures on the right capture so much more. They show the shape of the state, the flag and many unique features of the state.

For example, on the Maine page, we see Fifo the bear standing on a dock holding lobsters in each hand, with a pine cone tucked in his shirt. The state bird is sitting on a boat by the dock reading a book that says Longfellow on the cover. The water next to the dock shows whale tails and Matinicus Isle with puffins on it. In the distance we see land with a lighthouse, pine trees, a moose and lots of logs piled next to a sign that says “Logging.” The state flag flies on the dock and the shape of the state of Maine is shown in the corner.

The level of information provided by this picture is amazing. We learn so much about the state without having to read about it. We can talk about whatever details interest the kids, and ignore the others. I highly recommend this to anyone who would like to introduce young children to the United States. I know we will be using it for all of our state studies in the future.

My Rating: 5/5

My Book Retreat’s Rating System:

5/5 = It’s one of my favorites!
4/5 = It’s a great book!
3/5 = It’s a good book.
2/5 = I didn’t like it.
1/5 = I couldn’t even finish it.
